COMMUNICATION

All year in SAGE we will focus on the concept of DIVERSITY. We are now learning about the many diverse types of communication. Among these are:
  • Non-verbal communication
  • Braille
  • Sign language
    • We can now do our pledge, names and the alphabet in sign language

We are really focused on examining the 2008 U.S. Presidential election between Obama ( Democratic candidate) and McCain (Republican candidate) So far we have engaged in these activities:
  • Viewing and analysing Presidential debates for both elements of issues and communication styles: www.obama-mccain.info. This site has been helpful!
  • When watching the Presidential debates, some of the non-verbal signals we have discussed and are to observe include:
    • eye blinking
    • tone of voice
    • arm crossing
    • hand gestures - Hand to mouth, open palm, steepling, etc.
    • Breathing patterns
    • Body Leans
    • Micro-expressions
    • Smiling
  • Class researched and created Bubble Map posters about the political differences of McCain and Obama

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION
  • 93% of our overall message content is non-verbal
  • Includes
    • tone of voice
    • clothes/appearance
    • body scent
    • facial gestures
    • eye contact
    • body language
Non-verbal signals have 5 times the influence on people than do words that are used!
  • Class researched and created Flow map posters about particular types of communications
